Whom can you Trust with Wine Reviews?

We keep running into this issue, and we will show crass examples from time to time. I’m not saying we’re more consistent than the rest, but these examples show how hard it is to find consistent reviews.

Last Horizon Pinot Noir 2013

Destemmed and cold-soaked for 6 days pre-fermentation before 10 months maturation in mainly used French oak. The bouquet is expressive, but it is the palate that sets this wine apart, the fruit coating the mouth with red and blue fruit flavours that run from the tip of the tongue to the lingering aftertaste that won’t go away, Tasmanian acidity cunningly woven through. 95 Points James Halliday

A quietly powerful Pinot with a very good , youthful hue and a complex potpourri, dreid herb and forestry bouquet. Medium bodied, focused and intense, it has superior depth and flavour. Elegant, long and refined. 94 points, Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine, 100 Top new releases

Clean, fragrant, stone fruit meets green grass scents in the bouquet. Pretty simple, but communicates the variety and region well. Crisp, tangy, zingy to taste with electric, citrussy acidity and a light menthol character finishing off the wine. Not a lot of depth, but a lot of refreshment factor. 86 points, Mike Bennie at the Winefront

Grosset Polish Hill Riesling 2014

grosset-2014-rieslings-002A super-elegant, beautifully balanced and poised Riesling that becomes steadily more impressive with each sip, the flavours of lime and lemon wreathed by slatey acidity. It has years of improvement in front of it, but one can hardly be blamed for enjoying it now. 97 points, James Halliday

Grosset Polish Hill Riesling with a bit of flesh. Pale straw-green, good amount of pulpy lime flavour, exceptionally dry, slatey finish and thrilling length. Weight of flavour but undeniably structural/ architectural. Gravitas. Commands attention. 95 Points, Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front

A fragrant aroma incorporating dried flowers or pot pourri, with some dried herb and lemon citrus notes. Tight and fine, intense and lively with lots of energy. Searing intensity powered by acid. A racy, bracing wine that promises to be a long keeper. 93 points, Huon Hooke

Sweet vanilla notes, honey crunchy nut cornflakes, some hay like development, lacking in punch through the palate, but has a strong limey finish. Subdued. Maybe in a lull at the moment? 89+ points. Gary Walsh, Winefront

Evans and Tate Porongurup Pinot Noir 2012

The bouquet begins meaty and a touch reductive, laced with smoky oak, and morphs into blackberry fruit which turns sweetly smooth and luxurious in the mouth. Its intensity and power are matched by ample fine tannins. 95 points, Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine, 100 Top new releases

Smells a bit sweaty, but not too bad really, just like humid day in the Australia bush or something, lots of greenery in varying states. Dark fruit is there too. Kind of a sweet-sour scent. Has some green notes to taste too, and is crisp and lively in texture. Finishes sour-sweet, but erring on the sourer side. Fruit is sweet then bitter in flavour. Texture plump then thin. It’s a decent drink and I imagine better for a light chill. 87 points, Mike Bennie, Winefront
